Dorian Gray
Title Sequence
The title sequence for Dorian Gray is based on Oscar Wilde’s novel, The Portrait of Dorian Gray. This horror-thriller narrates the story of a young man who trades his soul for eternal youth and beauty, leaving his portrait to age in his place and embody all of his sins.
The colour scheme of black, white, and red is carefully chosen. The white rose symbolises Dorian’s innocence, beauty, and purity, contrasted against the red, which represents blood, hunger, and desire. The rose gradually transforms from white to red, reflecting the shift in Dorian’s character as his own desires and sins corrupt him.
The title sequence explores the effect of others' influence on our character, illustrating how pursuing our desires can transform us. It serves as a metaphor for themes of Christianity and the Devil’s influence, provoking reflection on moral beliefs about right and wrong and how acting on our desires and sin leads to the decay of the soul and our identity.
